The Bugaboo Lodge

So, Ciona Thompson has recieved a once in a life time chance to go to the Bugaboo Lodge up in the Purcell Mountains

"This season I have been the first David Thompson Secondary student to be invited to intern and to take part in a ski guild practicum with the CMH Bugaboo Lodge; besides skiing powder and being surrounded by breath taking views, I will be learning about the tourism industry, avalanche safety, working with people and most of all, improving my skiing. The Bugaboo Lodge is located in the pristine Purcell Mountains and provides a variety of skiing terrain with astounding views of the world -renowned mountains (where a number of ski movies have been made). CMH or Canadian Mountain Holidays is a nationwide company which offers a once in a life time experience and brings people to the heart of the mountains. I am very excited to be working with such an amazing company, and I feel blessed that I have been presented with such an opportunity to experience something I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to do. This opportunity came to me from a scholarship I received and took part in over this past summer."

Debate

Kate Godlien and Blake Beggs recently participated in the Pumpkin Classic debate tournament at Rossland Secondary School. Here's the writeup: "We debated 3 times, winning each of our 3 debates. We placed 1st as a team, Kate also received 1st place in the individual rankings, and Blake ranked 3rd place in the individual rankings. There were a total of 22 senior debaters. We debated 2 different teams from Kelowna, and 1 team from Gonzaga Prep (America)."

Congratulations Kate and Blake!

About Breakfast Club

So, here is the write up for the Breakfast Club initiative from Julia Halwa:

Chair: Julia Halwa
Co-Chair: Kate Godlien
Volunteers: Tannis Hemmelgarn, Blayr Lightfoot, Kyra Grocutt, Ciona Thompson, Erin Hillary,

Why
To give students a healthy breakfast once a week. This event has been put foward to assist families to have breakfast, and for students who simply do not eat breakfast.

How
Eight students made a hot breakfast for the Laird elementary students every Tuesday for three weeks. Tannis cooked for the three weeks, talked to Jill about planning, served breakfast once, cleaned up twice and took time outside school to help prepare. Blayr and Kyra cooked twice, shopped for groceries twice, and served twice. Ciona cleaned and served twice, along with taking time outside school to help prepare the event. Erin cooked twice and served twice. Holly cooked twice, served twice, and helped plan outside of school and leadership. Kate planned events with Julia and talked to Jill, cooked three times, cleaned three times, grocery shopped once and planned both in and outside of leadership block. Julia cooked three times, served three times, grocery shopped three times, talked to Jill with planning and took time outside school for planning and preparing."

Some updates

Stuff has been happening and I haven'tsaid anything about it yet so:

First we have a newspaper clipping for Julia Halwa who helped chair our schools pink day and the breakfeast club

Here's another newspaper clipping about the breakfast club, I realize it isn't exactly readable, but I will post a quick rundown soon.

Next I have a write up from Kate Godlien who got the entire school in mad dash to raise money for a charity called "Change for Change"

"Change for Change was a blitz initiative where we were raising money to help provide food, medicine and general aid for the refugees of Somalia. Through fundraising at the Windermere Fall Fair, going class to class to explain the situation and receiving generous donations during the lunch hours we were able to contribute $1600. This was an overwhelming success for an eight day fundraising effort. "

More updates to come!

May

Dearest Vulnerable Children Society supporter;

I’m sending you this newsletter because you have shown interest and support for the great work our VCS volunteers or our partner Faya Orphanage does. Maybe you have transported donations to Ethiopia, made a gift in someone’s name, held a fundraiser, or help out with a monthly donation. In all cases: We’d like to say a huge and hearty THANKS! And share with you all the good news from our first seven months in operation.
